Illumicrate July 2022 unboxing – In too deep

This unboxing contains spoilers!

Theme of the box

Description by Illumicrate

Our July theme is IN TOO DEEP! Sometimes we find ourselves in a bit of hot water (literally or figuratively!) and need a bit of creative thinking to work our way out.

Our July book is a YA standalone fantasy. When the last living water diviner in the kingdom is tracked down by her old mentor, he has a proposition for her: help him locate & destroy a magical well and get revenge on the prince that abused them both. We loved the magical worldbuilding, the unlikely cast of characters (including a very resourceful corgi) and the ending we didn’t see coming!

Our Illumicrate edition is signed by the author and features all exclusive: cover, stencilled edges, and reverse dust jacket art and foil embossing on the hardback both by @niallcgrant!

Items for this month are inspired by A Darker Shade of Magic, Black Sun, and an officially licensed Folk of the Air item! There is also a fandom neutral item! We love this collection of stunning, useful items with a cohesive theme!

The book at a glance:

  • All exclusive: cover, stencilled edges, with reverse dust jacket artwork & foil embossing by @niallcgrant and signed by the author

BENEATH THE WAVES TOWEL

ARTWORK BY: YOSHI YOSHITANI

Dry off with this Folk of the Air-inspired microfiber towel.

I’ve decided to leave mine wrapped in plastic because I’m not sure yet if I’ll use it. I love the art on it though. Thank you @minireads for letting me use your photo for this blog!

Item 2 & 3

FLOW LIKE A RIVER WATER BOTTLE

DESIGNED BY: FEZ INKWRIGHT

Sate your thirst with this glass water bottle.

NIGHT SPIRE TRAVEL TOOTHBRUSH HOLDER

ARTWORK BY: NO0NE DESIGNS

Does this travel toothbrush holder actually belong to Alucard Emery? Who can say, but it’s stylish enough to.

I’m going to study soon so this bottle is very convenient. I’m using cups and bottles when I want to drink something on my room while I’m studying. My friend will love the wooden toothbrush so she will get mine.

Item 4

Take a sip with one of our four metal straws representing the clans from Black Sun

Plastic straws are no longer a thing so say hello to reuseable straws! Here’s what they say from too to bottom. “Winged serpent, Water strider, Golden eagle, Carrion crow”.

THE DROWNED WOODS BY EMILY LLOYD-JONES

Once upon a time, the kingdoms of Wales were rife with magic and conflict, and eighteen-year-old Mererid “Mer” is well-acquainted with both. She is the last living water diviner and has spent years running from the prince who bound her into his service. Under the prince’s orders, she located the wells of his enemies, and he poisoned them without her knowledge, causing hundreds of deaths. After discovering what he had done, Mer went to great lengths to disappear from his reach. Then Mer’s old handler returns with a proposition: use her powers to bring down the very prince that abused them both. The best way to do that is to destroy the magical well that keeps the prince’s lands safe. With a motley crew of allies. including a corgi that may or may not be a spy. Mer may finally be able to steal precious freedom and peace for herself.

Enjoy your Illumicrate edition with all exclusive: cover, stencilled edges, reverse dust jacket art and foil embossing on the hardback both by Niall C Grant!

It’s a really pretty edition of the book. As usual, this one wasn’t on the radar but I’m very curious to it!

Conclusion

This box has many useful items! Reusable straws, a toothbrush, a water bottle, a towel. It really gives this box a beachy vibe. My favourite item is either the straws or the water bottle. The book is gorgeous and sounds interesting as well.
